Prof. Gutfreund is the Andre Aisenstadt Chair in Theoretical Physics (emeritus) at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, since 1985. He served as the head of the Racah Institute for Physics, head of the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (1989-1990), Rector (1991-1992) and President of The Hebrew University (1992- 1997). He is currently the Director of the Einstein Archives.
