In the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous movements of religious renewal arose in Europe, from Sabbatianism and Hasidism among Jews to Pietism among Christians. In the Christian world, this phenomenon spanned the Russian Orthodox Chruch in the east and Protestantism and Quakerism in the west. This school will attempt to characterize the distinctiveness of each form of renewal while searching for the commonalities that explain their simultaneous appearance, as well as exploring and understanding the forces that enables their emergence at this particular time.
