Itay Matan (b. 1995, Jerusalem) creates paintings that deal with the construction and fragmentation of fictional spaces through the use of eclectic imagery. His works exist in a liminal space where location and time are unclear, raising questions of identity and belonging. Through symbolically rich microcosmoses, Matan employs internal logic to combine various objects, textures, and modes of representation. He seeks to facilitate contemplation on the ability of images to function as cultural representatives and to discuss the values reflected in them, addressing the historical role of painting in the contemporary economy of images.
Matan holds a B.F.A. (2020) and an M.F.A. (2025) from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Edmond de Rothschild Center, Tel Aviv; Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv; Binyamin Gallery, Tel Aviv; and Koresh 14 Gallery, Jerusalem.
He is a two-time recipient of the Chaim Schiff Prize for Figurative-Realistic Painting (2019, 2020). His works are held in private collections in Israel and abroad.
