Michael is a professor in the Department of History of the Jewish People at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research interests are: Orthodox Judaism, especially ultra-Orthodoxy; religious conflict in nineteenth century central Europe; history of Hapsburg and Hungarian Jewry; Jewish Enlightenment and its reception; enlightened absolutism and the Jews; social and economic history; Jewish politics; early Jewish nationalism.
